Defense in Lineage 2 isn't a single number, but several independent layers. A blow might not land at all, might hit a shield, might be reflected back, or might be nullified by a separate skill—and all of these are calculated according to different rules.
Below we'll explain how shield blocking works, what determines its chance, why shields are noticeably more effective against archers, which mage spells are blocked by shields, and how dodge, counterattack, and reflection are calculated.
In what order does the game check protection?
Each hit undergoes several checks in a row. Understanding the order makes it easier to explain why one skill "failed" while another worked twice:
| Step | What is being checked? | If it worked |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hit - Accuracy vs. Evasion | miss, no damage |
| 2 | Shield Block - Shield, Sector, Throw | Shield defense is added to defense |
| 3 | Perfect Block - 5% after a successful block | damage drops to 1, and magic to zero |
| 4 | Damage calculation | protection is subtracted, multipliers are applied |
| 5 | Physical Skill Evasion | the damage is reset after calculation |
| 6 | Reflection and counterattack | part of the damage goes back to the attacker |
Shield Block: Three Conditions
The game checks three things in a row, and it only takes one of them to fail for the block to not exist:
- In the left hand is a shield. A two-handed weapon takes up both hands, so there is no blocking with it at all.
- Attacker in the sector. By default it is 60° in front of you. A blow from behind the back is not caught by the shield.
- The throw passed against your block chance.
What determines the block chance?
The base value for all classes is - zeroThe whole chance is collected further, and here is the order:
| What | How many | How is it calculated? |
|---|---|---|
| Shield | + 20 | the same for any shield in the game |
| Agility | factor | DEX bonus only when shield is equipped |
| Attacker with a bow | + 30 | chance bonus |
| Attacker with a dagger | + 12 | chance bonus |
| Skills | factors | Shield Mastery, Guard Stance, and more |
| Потолок | 90 | nothing rises higher |
The bonus against bows and daggers isn't a property of the shield, but a property of the weapon being used to strike you. The game looks at the attacker's weapon at the moment of impact.

The numbers on the graph are for a human knight with base agility. The key point is clear: against an archer, a shield turns from a secondary item into a primary defense, and with the Shield Mastery passive, it hits the ceiling.
What does a successful block give?
A blocked attack does not disappear - your defense is increased shield protection, and damage is calculated based on this amount. The damage reduction depends on your shield and which abilities enhance it.
There is a plus on top ideal block: with a chance 5% Each successful block reduces the impact almost completely. Against a physical attack, the damage becomes equal to unit, against magic - zero.
Shield and magic: works, but not against everything
The common belief that a shield only protects against physical attacks is incorrect. Shield defense can also be added to magical damage calculations, but only for spells with a special attribute in the game files. These eight, and these are the basic attack spells of all schools:
| Spell | Class |
|---|---|
| Elven Wizard | |
| Wizard | |
| Necromancer, Spellhowler | |
| Spellhowler | |
| Spellsinger | |
| Sorcerer | |
| Dark Wizard | |
| Dark Mage, Elven Mage, Mage |
The block check here is the same - shield, arc, throw with the same bonus against a bow. The difference is that the shield's defense is added to magical defense, and a perfect block completely negates the damage.
All other magical shield attacks are not stopped at all - there will be no block or message about it.
And these physical skills ignore the shield
Mirror image: some heavy physical skills have a feature that disables the block. The shield will never trigger against them, no matter how many chances you accumulate:
| Skill | Who uses |
|---|---|
| Fortune Seeker, Maestro, Titan | |
| Tyrant | |
| Destroyer | |
| Dreadnought, Fortune Seeker, Maestro, Titan | |
| Destroyer, Gladiator | |
| Bounty Hunter, Destroyer, Gladiator, Overlord, Warcryer, Warsmith | |
| Orc Monk, Tyrant | |
| Tyrant | |
| Dreadnought | |
| Tyrant | |
| Warlord | |
| Gladiator | |
| Gladiator | |
| Bounty Hunter, Destroyer, Warlord, Warsmith |
Normal attacks and all other physical abilities are blocked normally.
Shield grade matters less than it seems
I checked everything 84 The game's shield. Their block chance and dodge penalty are identical down to one—only their defense differs:
| Грейд | Shields | Shield protection | Block Chance | Evasion |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ungraded | 15 | 47 - 90 | + 20 | -8 |
| D | 8 | 101 - 154 | + 20 | -8 |
| C | 7 | 166 - 203 | + 20 | -8 |
| B | 47 | 216 - 230 | + 20 | -8 |
| A | 4 | 243 - 256 | + 20 | -8 |
| S | 3 | 269 - 290 | + 20 | -8 |
That is, the S-grade shield blocks not more often A wooden one—it's more effective at absorbing a blocked attack. And any shield reduces your evasion by 8 points: blocking is compensated by the enemy's misses.
Skills that increase shield
Some increase the block chance, others increase shield defense, and others expand the sector:
| Skill | Type | What gives | Who teaches? |
|---|---|---|---|
| active | Shield protection +100% | Elder | |
| passive | shield block angle 360° | Shillien Knight, Temple Knight | |
| switchable | Shield protection -40%; shield block angle 360° | Paladin | |
| active | Shield block chance +80% | Elder, Prophet | |
| switchable | Shield block chance +50% | Shillien Knight, Temple Knight | |
| passive | Shield defense +10 | Eva's Templar, Hell Knight, Phoenix Knight, Shillien Templar | |
| switchable | Shield defense +560 | Dark Avenger, Paladin, Shillien Knight, Temple Knight | |
| passive | Shield Block Chance +100%; Shield Defense +60% | Dark Avenger, Elven Knight, Knight, Paladin, Palus Knight, Shillien Knight, Temple Knight | |
| active | Shield block chance +50% | Overlord |
Aegis и Aegis Stance They expand the sector to a full circle—the block begins to work even from behind. Aegis Stance also cuts the shield's defense, effectively changing the block's strength to its frequency.
Miss: Accuracy vs. Evasion
The very first layer of defense is to avoid getting hit. The chance of getting hit is calculated as one line:
chance to hit = 88 + 2 × (attacker's accuracy − your dodge)
All things being equal, this is 88%Each unit of difference is worth 2%, and the result is squeezed into the boundaries of 28% until 98% - It is impossible to dodge completely, as well as to hit accurately.

Accuracy and deviation are calculated using the same formula: √DEX × 6 + level, plus one for each level above 69, another +2 after 77, +1 after 80 and +1 after 85. The difference between characters is achieved through equipment and skills.
An interesting detail. The game files specify bonuses to hits based on position and conditions: +10% from behind, +5% from the side, +3% from above, -3% from below, and -10% at night. These bonuses are applied when calculating damage, but when calculating the chance to hit, they are divided by 100—and the contribution drops to hundredths of a percent. This means that attacking from behind is beneficial in terms of damage, but has virtually no impact on the chance to hit.
Evasion skills
| Skill | Type | What gives | Who teaches? |
|---|---|---|---|
| passive | Evasion +6 | Abyss Walker, Assassin, Elven Scout, Hawkeye, Phantom Ranger, Plains Walker, Rogue, Silver Ranger, Treasure Hunter | |
| active | Evasion +4 | Elder, Oracle | |
| passive | Evasion +3 | Dark Fighter, Dwarven Fighter, Elven Fighter, Fighter, Orc Fighter | |
| active | Evasion +4 | Spectral Master | |
| active | evasion -4 | Cleric, Prophet | |
| passive | Evasion +4 | Abyss Walker, Assassin, Elven Scout, Plains Walker, Rogue, Treasure Hunter | |
| active | Evasion +4 | Warcryer | |
| active | evasion -6 | Soultaker | |
| active | Physical skill evasion +90 | Windrider | |
| active | Evasion +6 | Ghost Sentinel, Moonlight Sentinel | |
| passive | Evasion +6 | Artisan, Bounty Hunter, Destroyer, Gladiator, Orc Raider, Scavenger, Warlord, Warrior, Warsmith | |
| passive | Evasion +7 | Abyss Walker, Assassin, Elven Scout, Hawkeye, Orc Monk, Phantom Ranger, Plains Walker, Rogue, Silver Ranger, Treasure Hunter, Tyrant | |
| active | evasion -6 | Dark Avenger, Knight, Paladin | |
| active | evasion -9 | Tyrant | |
| active | Evasion +4 | Shillien Saint | |
| active | Evasion +12 | Tyrant | |
| active | evasion -3 | Destroyer, Orc Raider | |
| active | Evasion +3 | Swordsinger | |
| active | evasion -4 | Treasure Hunter | |
| active | evasion -4 | Overlord | |
| active | Evasion +4 | Overlord | |
| active | Evasion +25 | Abyss Walker, Assassin, Elven Scout, Plains Walker, Rogue, Treasure Hunter |
Note the downsides: heavy combat skills like Berserker Spirit, Majesty, and evasion totems take awayTheir bonuses to damage and defense are compensated by the fact that you get hit more often.
Separate evasion of physical skills
This is not the same as a regular evasion. The check is ongoing. after after the damage has already been calculated: if it passes, the damage is completely reset and both sides receive a miss message.
Only works against physical abilities and only if the damage dealt is greater than one. This check doesn't affect normal attacks.
Counterattack
Triggered by chance and hits back according to the formula 700,94 × your physical attack ÷ the attacker's physical defenseDamage doesn't depend on how many hits you take, only on the balance of your strength.
There are three conditions: the enemy's skill must be physical, without additional effects и meleeThe counterattack does not work against normal attacks and spells.
| Skill | Type | What gives | Who teaches? |
|---|---|---|---|
| active | Counterattack chance +90% | Ghost Hunter | |
| active | Counterattack chance +20% | Hell Knight |
Damage Reflection
Returns a portion of the physical damage taken to the attacker. Unlike a counterattack, this depends on how much damage you were hit with:
| Skill | Type | What gives | Who teaches? |
|---|---|---|---|
| active | Physical damage reflection +20% | Sorcerer | |
| active | Physical damage reflection +20% | Warcryer | |
| active | Physical damage reflection +20% | Spellsinger | |
| active | Physical damage reflection +20% | Dark Avenger | |
| switchable | Physical damage reflection +30% | Duelist, Fortune Seeker, Grand Khavatari, Maestro | |
| active | Physical damage reflection +20% | Swordsinger |
Separate protection from bows
In addition to the block bonus, there is a skill that simply reduces damage taken from bows:
| Skill | Type | What gives | Who teaches? |
|---|---|---|---|
| active | vulnerability to bows -40% | Dark Avenger, Elven Knight, Knight, Paladin, Palus Knight, Shillien Knight, Temple Knight |
Combined with the +30 block chance bonus, this makes a knight with a shield an extremely difficult target for an archer.
Fascia Massage:
- The block requires three conditions: a shield in hand, an attacker within a 60° sector, and a successful throw.
- The base block chance for all classes is zero; the shield provides 20 and is multiplied by the DEX bonus.
- Against a bow, the chance is increased by 30, against a dagger - 12.
- Block chance cap is 90.
- All 84 shields provide the same +20 to block and -8 to evasion; grading only changes defense.
- A perfect block has a 5% chance of leaving 1 damage, and zero damage from magic.
- The shield blocks 8 basic mage spells; other magic is not blocked.
- 14 heavy physical skills ignore the shield completely.
- Chance to hit = 88 + 2 × difference between accuracy and evasion, range 28…98%.
- Aegis and Aegis Stance expand the block sector to a full circle.
- A counterattack affects the balance of power, while a reflection affects the damage received.
Healthy!
The block chance cap and the list of abilities the shield ignores are PvP balance changes and vary from project to project: L2 servers.
