Talking Island: The Cradle of Human Magic
The island where all roads begin is older than the kingdom itself: here the elves honored the spirit-king Hieros, here they opened the first school of human magic—and here the students betrayed their teachers.
Source According to in-game dialogues of NPCs of Talking Island: Sir Collin Windawood at the Obelisk of Victory, explorer Matheo from the Ivory Tower (spirit-king Hieros, megaliths), lighthouse keeper Rockswell (doll ritual for Shilen of the Deep), Sir Klaus Vasper from Gludio (ritual sword of the Windawood clan).
For thousands of adventurers, Talking Island means their first earned coins, their first wooden sword, and a ferry to the mainland. No one stays here longer than a couple of weeks. And few, running past the gray tower on the hill, realize it's been there longer than the human kingdom itself—and that the entire island beneath these newcomers, if you listen carefully, tells the story of how humans acquired magic. And what those who gave it to them paid for it.
Island of the Spirit Kings
Long before human villages the island was sacred land of the Light Elves — могучих заклинателей, что говорили с духами.
"The ancient elves' religion was far more shamanic than that of other elven races: they made sacrifices to spirit kings and erected megaliths for magical purposes. Here, I believe, the elven spellcasters honored Hieros, the spirit king of this island."
A noble people who ruled the land after the giants,
The First School of Human Magic
When the elves went to war with the orcs, they needed allies—and they did something no one had done before: Right here, on the sacred island, the elves built a School of Witchcraft, selected gifted human youths, and trained them in the art of sorcery. The plan was military—to strengthen the army—but it was from this school that all human magic as such began: up to the Ivory Tower, up to the imperial academies, up to cave schools of forbidden arts
The alliance worked. The orcs were defeated, and in memory of that victory, a monument stood on the hill.
"The elves won because they forged an alliance with humans and taught them magic, fighting side by side. But in the end, the elves were betrayed by humans—and, like defeated orcs, driven to the outskirts of the continent... The noble elves who ruled this land after the giants were driven back by humans, whom they themselves considered insignificant. Don't you think history is, in essence, a cruel joke?"
Эльфы ушли в леса — навстречу new wars with former studentsThe School of Witchcraft was abandoned and collapsed; today it Elven Ruins, кишащие нежитью и скелетами, — первое «подземелье» в жизни каждого новичка.
There's a third monument on the island—a living one. On the northern shore stands a lighthouse, and once a year its keeper, Rockswell, launches a boat carrying a doll in the form of a human maiden: glass eyes, yarn hair, the delicate work of a village tailor.
Rockswell Lighthouse keeper
Rockswell himself calls this rite bluntly: a ceremony for Shilen of the Deep Seas. Островные моряки, сами того не зная, хранят память о временах, когда богиней воды была старшая из богинь — the one whose name has long been a curse on the mainland. The small island proved more honest than the mainland: it didn't rewrite its gods, but simply replaced the living sacrifice with a doll.
The Knight at the Beginning of All Roads
The current Talking Island is a kingdom's possession: the governor here is the same Sir Collin Windawood, a knight of the Gludio guild. The Windawood family has preserved ritual sword — клинок, которым посвящают в рыцари каждого людского воина; уезжая на остров, сэр Collin передал реликвию собрату по гильдии — сэру Klaus Vasper, стражу трёх мечей ГлудиоIt's almost like a parable: the keeper of the sword that opens the knightly path to humanity lives out his days on the island where the path to magic was once revealed to humanity, guarding a monument to someone else's victory that turned into someone else's grief.
